Some light-hearted rivalry fun quickly took a tragic turn Sunday when a plane chartered by Philadelphia Eagles fans crashed shortly after takeoff in Compton, Calif. Sunday, killing the pilot.
The plane was funded by Eagles fans to fly a banner over nearby Dallas Cowboys training camp, according to NJ Advance Media's Matt Lombardo.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the single engine plane crashed around 12:30 PST at Compton-Woodley Airport. The pilot was the only person on board at the time of the tragedy.
The plane was perhaps a response to Dallas Cowboys fans, who charted a plane to fly over the Eagles training camp Sunday morning that read "WE STILL DEM BOYZ! #SACKSCOMIN!".
According to the Associated Press, Greg Hardy contributed $300 for the flight.
Cowboys and Eagles fans both seperately started Go Fund Me pages to fly banners over the rival's training camp. According to the Dallas Morning News, the creator of the Eagles' Go Fund Me page tweeted that the plane that crashed was the one he chartered.
Up until the crash, @TheMightyEROCK had been live-tweeting a countdown to the plane's flight over Oxnard.
The banner was alledged to read "We Got DeMarco."
There has been no official confirmation as to the name of the pilot or where the plane was headed.
