HOUSTON (Reuters) - Promising Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro was scheduled to have surgery Friday after tearing the medial meniscus of his right knee, the team said Thursday.

There was no timetable for his return to action, Major League Baseball's official website (www.mlb.com) reported.

Castro, 23, injured the knee while stepping awkwardly on first base during Wednesday's exhibition game with the Detroit Tigers in Florida.

The Astros' first-round draft pick in 2008, Castro had impressed team officials with his catching although he batted only .205 in 195 major league at-bats last season.
