Just three weeks after being the focus of criticism over her speech at the Republican National Convention, Melania Trump is in the news again in a way she arguably would rather not be.
Politico on Wednesday raised questions about Melania Trump’s immigration status in the mid-1990’s, when she worked as a model in the United States.
Politico suggested that Trump’s visa status at the time did not authorize her to work in the United States.
On Thursday, the former super-model shot back in a statement, saying that she never has broken U.S. immigration laws.
"In recent days there has been a lot of inaccurate reporting and misinformation concerning my immigration status back in 1996," Trump said, according to various published reports. "Let me set the record straight: I have at all times been in full compliance with the immigration laws of this country. Period.”
“Any allegation to the contrary is simply untrue,” Trump continued. “In July 2006, I proudly became a U.S. citizen. Over the past 20 years, I have been fortunate to live, work and raise a family in this great nation and I share my husband's love for our country."
The Politico story said that Donald Trump’s statements about his wife’s visits to the United States in the 1990’s "suggest she first came to the country on a short-term visa that would not have authorized her to work as a model."
On Thursday, Politico followed up with a response to Melania Trump’s statement, saying that it failed to specifically address the points the publication had raised in its Wednesday story.
Her immigration history has grabbed headlines because of Donald Trump’s hard line on people who violate U.S. immigration laws. The candidate has made immigration enforcement a pillar of his presidential campaign, highlighting it from the time he announced he was running for the Oval Office.
