A Rochester, Michigan teen whose community rallied after learning he had only one week to live has passed away, My Fox Detroit reported.

Gage Garmo, 17, had been fighting osteosarcoma— an aggressive form of bone cancer— for nearly all of his high school career, according to the GoFundMe page set up by friends. On Jan. 7, doctors told him his time was running out.

The teen’s favorite rapper, Eminem, heard about Garmo from the GoFundMe page and even visited the teen on Sunday. On Monday evening, family and friends held a candlelight vigil at Rochester High School’s football field. Garmo had joined the varsity football team his senior year.

Garmo would have turned 18 on Friday.
