A task force rounded up 20 people accused of buying dozens of AK-47s at a time and illegally sending them across the border, a process called straw buying. The ring bought more than 700 guns, many coming from a gun store in Glendale, Arizona, authorities said.

One man is accused of buying 239 assault rifles and pistols for the ring. Another was told by ring leaders to try to get back 20 AK-47s that had been confiscated by police, an indictment says.

Dennis Burke, the U.S. attorney for Arizona, told the station that "straw buyers" think what they are doing is harmless but are actually contributing to violence in Mexico's drug war.
