MOSCOW – Russia's human rights commissioner says the Ukrainian servicewoman charged in the deaths of two Russian journalists is being sent to a detention facility in western Russia as her trial looms closer.
Nadezhda Savchenko, a military pilot, allegedly was working as a spotter in eastern Ukraine and provided the coordinates for a mortar attack that killed the two Russian journalists in 2014. The deaths took place in eastern Ukraine where Russia-backed separatists are fighting Ukrainian forces.
She was captured by rebels and brought to Russia under murky circumstances.
The preliminary hearing before her trial takes place on Thursday in Donetsk, near the Ukrainian border.
Human rights commissioner Ella Pamfilova told the Interfax news agency Saturday that Savchenko was en route to a jail in Novocherkassk, 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Donetsk.
