DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Bahrain's national airline says it plans to resume flights to Baghdad nearly two weeks after it and other carriers suspended operations after a passenger plane came under fire on landing in the Iraqi capital.
Gulf Air said on Thursday it would resume flights to Baghdad International Airport on Saturday. It says the decision followed "comprehensive safety and security assessments" as well as consultations with airport and security officials in Iraq.
The airline and Gulf rivals, including Dubai-based Emirates and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, halted flights last week after one of discount carrier FlyDubai's planes was struck by gunfire as it landed in the Iraqi capital.
Gulf Air flies three times weekly to Baghdad from Bahrain, and also operates daily flights to the Shiite holy city of Najaf, south of Baghdad.
