Authorities in Iraq say a suicide car bomb attack targeting a security checkpoint has killed five police officers north of the capital, Baghdad.

Police officials say the Friday afternoon attack took place when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into the checkpoint near Dujail town. They say the attack also wounded six people.

Dujail is 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad.

Medical officials in a nearby hospital confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to journalists.

Violence has surged in Iraq recently. According to the United Nations, 8,868 people were killed in Iraq last year — the country's highest death toll since the peak of sectarian bloodletting in 2007 and 2008.
