Six people were killed Saturday when a van carrying 16 people hit a car and overturned multiple times, Virginia authorities said.

It happened on Interstate 95 in Caroline County, Virginia State Police said in a statement. They said the driver of a 1998 Dodge van ran off the road, then came back and struck a Toyota Camry. State Police said the van overturned approximately five to six times and six passengers were thrown from the van.

It appears that no one in the van was wearing a seat belt when it crashed around 12:30 a.m., Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said in an email.

The six people thrown from the van -- four males, one female and a juvenile -- died at the scene, State Police said. The driver and nine other passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, they said.

The Camry's driver was uninjured.

Officials said the names of the deceased will be released once relatives are notified.
