This was not the start the Eagles were hoping for.
Philadelphia rookie quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs after his first NFL action in Thursday's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team announced Saturday.
The team still hopes to have him back before the end of the preseason, according to head coach Doug Pederson.
"Carson felt some discomfort and soreness as we began this morning's practice," Pederson said. "We decided to limit him throughout the remainder of practice and, as a precaution, sent him for a CT scan after practice. The scan revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs. We do not know an exact timetable for his return, but we hope to have him back before the end of the preseason."
Wentz was a controversial pick at No. 2 overall in this spring's draft. He played his college ball at FCS North Dakota State, and many questioned whether he could make a successful leap to the NFL. That will take some time to assess, but for now, this is not the start the Eagles -- who traded five picks for the right to draft him at No. 2 -- or Wentz were hoping for.
Wentz saw the majority of the Eagles' quarterback action Thursday, going 12-for-24 for 89 yards with an interception in the 17-9 win over the Bucs.
