Mingo returns to practice for banged-up Browns

BEREA, Ohio (AP) Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo returned to practice for the first time since undergoing right knee surgery on Aug. 6.

Mingo has been slowed by injuries throughout his NFL career, but the former first-round draft pick is on schedule and could play in the season opener on Sept. 13 against the Jets.

The Browns had several other injured players return, including cornerbacks Justin Gilbert (hip flexor) and Jordan Poyer (concussion).

Quarterback Johnny Manziel did not throw again as he continues to recover from a sore right elbow. The Browns shut down Manziel last week and believe rest will help his arm recover.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said the team still does not know the extent of rookie running back Duke Johnson's concussion. He was injured in a win Saturday over Tampa Bay.

Pettine said the team has no immediate plans to sign another running back.
