San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres announced on Monday that starting pitcher Clayton Richard elected to become a free agent after clearing outright waivers.

Richard, who began his career with the Chicago White Sox, was sent to San Diego in 2009 when the Padres traded former Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy to Chicago.

In 107 starts with San Diego, Richard had 40 wins and a pair of 14-win seasons in 2010 and 2012. In those years, the southpaw pitched over 200 innings, but had a disappointing start to 2013 where he appeared in 12 games before undergoing surgery on his left shoulder that ended his season.
