A weekly recap of how Mexican internationals fared over the weekend.
Jonathan dos Santos
Jonathan dos Santos brought his A-game to the Barcelona B team on Friday night. The Mexican international was at his creative best, setting up the opening two goals in Barca's 4-0 romp over Granada in the Spanish Second Division match.
Dos Santos set the first goal in the 15th minute, crossing the ball in from the right side. Nolito laid the ball back to Bartra, who headed it home.
The Mexican international was at it again three minutes into first-half stoppage time as his cross set up Jonathan Soriano's goal for a 2-0 advantage.
With World Cup hero Andrés Iniesta suspended for the match and two other players injured, dos Santos was rewarded for his play by being called up to Barcelona's roster for its UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second-leg encounter against Shakhtar Donetski (Ukraine) on Tuesday. Barca won the first leg, 5-1.
Barcelona B's next match is against Recreativo on Friday.
It was a good week for Manchester United, not such a great one for Chicharito. He had a counter-attack shot saved by goalkeeper Petr Cech in United's 1-0 road win over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg encounter mid-week as goalkeeper. Hernández never got off the bench against Fulham because United scored two first-half goals in its 2-0 English Premier League win on Saturday.
With Ditimar Berbatov (12th minute) and Antonio Valencia (32nd minute) scoring first-half goals, Hernández was not needed to perform his patented late-match heroics.
Perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson is saving Chicharito for two vital matches this week. United hosts Chelsea in the semifinal second leg on Tuesday and then takes on Manchester City in the English F.A. Cup on Saturday.
The left fullback started and played the full 90 minutes in Fulham's 2-0 EPL loss to United. He took one shot, but did not score. Fulham has next weekend off. The club plays at Wolverhampton on Saturday, April 23.
The left winger helped Deportivo Coruna to a scoreless draw at Malaga, despite the visitors playing the entire second half a man down due to a red card to Laure. He almost scored in the 29th minute as he fired a shot that just missed the left post. Guardado, who turned into his team's playmaker after Laure's ejection, had a free kick saved by the Malaga goalkeeper. Deportivo returns home to face Racing Santander on Sunday.
Dos Santos played 81 minutes of Racing Santander's 1-1 draw with Levante in Spain's La Liga on Sunday. Racing visits Deportivo Coruna on Sunday.
Moreno played the entire 90 minutes of AZ Alkmaar's 1-1 tie with NAC Breda in the Dutch First Division on Friday. Alkmaar next hosts ADO Den Haag on Saturday.
Vela did not get off the bench for West Bromwich Albion in its 3-2 EPL win over Sunderland on Saturday. WBA hosts Chelsea on Saturday.
Juárez did not dress for Celtic FC in its 1-0 win over St. Mirren in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday. Celtic next plays away at St. Johnstone in a league match on Tuesday before meeting Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
Francisco Javier Rodríguez
The defender sat the entire game on the bench in PSV Eindhoven's 2-2 draw with Heerenveen in the Dutch First Division. PSV, which failed to retake the Dutch First Division lead, visits Heracles Almelo this Sunday.
Barrera did not dress for West Ham United for its 3-0 EPL loss to Bolton on Saturday. West Ham hosts Aston Villa on Saturday.
Bravo played the first 45 minutes before he was replaced by C.J. Sapong at halftime of Sporting Kansas City's 1-0 Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup play-in win over the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. The forward almost scored from close-range in the 25th minute, but goalkeeper Tyler Deric saved his shot. Sapong scored the game-winning goal. KC's next match is an MLS encounter at the Columbus Crew on Saturday.
Márquez performed at central defender in the New York Red Bulls' 1-0 Major League Soccer loss at the Philadelphia Union. Fellow central defender Tim Ream set up the Union's lone goal when he miskicked the ball right to Danny Mwanga, who passed to Roger Torres. Márquez tried to chase down Torres in vain as the forward scored.
The midfielder watched the entire MLS match – Chivas USA's scoreless tie with the Columbus Crew – from the bench. Chivas travels to Vancouver to meet the Whitecaps on Saturday.
