Online dating do's and don'ts Video

Online dating is part of the norm nowadays, and while there are a litany of different apps and websites to choose from, the rules are pretty much standard.

One in five adults ages 25-34 have used online dating, according to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, and studies show that people are no longer looking at online dating as a desperate way of meeting people.

So now that it’s become less stigmatized, Zoosk online dating spokesman Cristy Marrero sat down with Fox News Latino to discuss some do’s and don'ts.

“The optimal thing to do is to just be yourself,” Marrero said. “Stop pretending something you're not. At the end of the day the person wants to know that you're going to be that same person that they're looking at. Try to show your personality, be yourself.”

The most important part of your profile, Marrero says, are your photos. Zoosk launched a Photo Verification tool that makes sure the photos used are of the actual user.

According to the company, Latinos who use the tool are 2.5 times more likely to get a message than those who don’t.

As for those messages, women – particularly Latinas – should take more initiative online and be the first to send a message. According to Zoosk research, Latina women who initiate conversation are five times more likely to get a response than those who don’t.

But, Marrero said, it’s generally a good idea to give someone three chances to contact you back, after the third time it’s time to move on.
