No bail for drunk driver who killed a mother and 4 children
The Oregon man's blood alcohol level was almost four times the legal limit.
A driver arrested after a crash Sunday that killed a woman and four children near Salem, Ore., had a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit, police revealed Tuesday.
A judge in Salem ordered Favian Garcia, 27, to be held without bail, saying the defendant would be “a danger to the public if released.”
A probable-cause statement showed Garcia had a blood-alcohol content of 0.318 after the collision.
It was Garcia's third DUI arrest, the Statesman-Journal reported.
The crash happened on Oregon State Highway 99 East when a Land Rover driven by Garcia collided head-on with a Buick Century driven by Lisette Medrano-Perez, police said. She and the four children died at the scene.
Garcia, who police said had minor injuries and was not the registered owner of the Land Rover, was arrested Monday on five counts of manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and outstanding warrants from Marion County.
Lisette Medrano-Perez, 25, of Molalla, Ore., was killed in the crash, along with four children, Oregon State Police said. The children were identified as Ivan Ricardo Medrano-Contreras, 8; Andrus Medrano-Contreras, 6; Dayanara Medrano-Perez, 4; and Angelina Vazquez-Crisp, 2.
Medrano-Perez was the mother of the three oldest children and an aunt and temporary legal guardian of the youngest child, police said.
