A New York City man is facing a murder charge after his wife was found dead with her throat slashed.

Police said officers found 45-year-old Karen Ashley late Tuesday in the driver's seat of her car, which was parked outside her Brooklyn apartment. She was declared dead at the scene.

Beresford Ashley, 55, later surrendered himself, according to police. The New York Daily News reports prosecutors said he told police he believed he had "committed an offense" and had fought with his wife in front of her apartment.

Beresford Ashley faces charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He has been ordered jailed without bail.

The husband said nothing as he was escorted out of a precinct building Wednesday.

It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.
