Hit-and-run charge against Medal of Honor recipient dropped

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Officials say a hit-and-run charge against Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter has been dismissed.

Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office spokeswoman Nicole Holland said Thursday that the misdemeanor charge was dropped. Court records show Carpenter paid a $237.50 fine for making an improper turn.

The charges stemmed from a December incident in which Carpenter struck an 18-year-old man in a Columbia crosswalk. The man was treated at the scene for scrapes and a leg injury. Police say Carpenter stopped briefly but didn't leave his name or offer help.

A call by The Associated Press to Carpenter's attorney was not returned.

Carpenter received the nation's highest military honor in 2014. Officials say he lost an eye while taking a grenade blast to save a fellow Marine.
