Police officers shot a man several times after he fired at the officers during a chase late Tuesday in northeast Baltimore, police officials said.

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire and spotted a gunman, who then fled on foot, Col. Stanley Brandford, the chief of the criminal investigation division, said at a news conference.

"At some point in time, the gunman — as the officers were chasing him — turned toward the officers and fired several shots," Brandford said. "Responding officers returned fire, at which time the suspect was shot ... several times."

The man was taken to the hospital, where he appears to be in stable condition, Brandford said. The officers were not injured, he said.

Authorities didn't say how many police officers were involved and haven't released the names and races of the man or officers. The department's Special Investigation Response Team and homicide team is investigating the shooting and several officers are being questioned as a part of that investigation, Brandford said. He noted that there was a large scene because of the chase and because investigators want to make sure they don't miss any evidence.
