Maryland authorities are trying to identify a chemical found in the car and home of a man whose death authorities have deemed suspicious.

Salisbury Police said in a news release that officers on patrol Monday first detected the chemical when they stopped to investigate a car parked next to an abandoned building.

The release said no one was in the car, but it appeared to be covered with a chemical that emitted a strong, noxious odor. The officers tracked down the car's owner and went to his home, where they saw the 50-year-old man him lying on the floor inside. When they tried to enter the home, they were driven out by fumes from what seemed to be the same chemical.

The fire department removed the man's body.
