The Latest on two NYPD officers shot and wounded while patrolling stairwell of a public housing project (all times local):

Authorities have confirmed the identities of the two police officers shot and wounded while patrolling a New York housing project as Officers Patrick Espeut, 29, and Diara Cruz, 24.

The officers are listed in stable condition Friday. Espeut was hit in the cheek. Cruz was shot in the abdomen.

Police say the officers encountered two people in a stairwell Thursday night when one of them pulled a gun and opened fire. Both officers were struck. Police say the shooter fled into an apartment where officers found him dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have confirmed he has been identified as 23-year-old Malik Chavis.

A second person who encountered the officers in the stairwell was taken into custody,
