A former police officer in North Carolina has been sentenced to at least 22 years in prison for his guilty plea on charges involving a chase and attempted murder.

The StarNews of Wilmington (http://bit.ly/1i7pwRn ) says the former Leland police officer pleaded guilty in Brunswick County to charges from a chase last September when he fired at pursuing deputies before wrecking his truck in Horry County, South Carolina.

Forty-one-year-old Howard Henry Smith Jr. of Supply pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempted murder, firing a gun into a moving vehicle and possessing material obtained by peeping.

Smith pleaded guilty in Conway, South Carolina, in April to attempted murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Smith will serve the North Carolina sentence once he completes the South Carolina sentence.
