SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Two more former students at California Polytechnic State University have been sentenced to jail for hazing a freshman who died of alcohol poisoning while pledging a fraternity.
Adam Marszal and Russell Taylor, both 23, pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor hazing and apologized to the parents of Carson Starkey, who was from Austin, Texas.
Starkey was 18. He died in December 2008 after drinking large amounts of alcohol in 90 minutes as part of a hazing ritual at the San Luis Obispo school.
Judge Linda Hurst sentenced Marszal and Taylor to 30 days in jail and three years' probation. She also ordered 40 hours of community service or two presentations on the dangers of alcohol and hazing.
Two other Sigma Alpha Epsilon members pleaded no contest to misdemeanor hazing in June and received similar sentences.
