DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Longtime NASCAR reporter/editor Benny Phillips is the recipient of the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR media excellence.
NASCAR officials made the announcement Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.
Phillips spent 48 years with the High Point Enterprise in North Carolina, serving as the newspaper's sports editor for 32 of them. He will be honored posthumously during NASCAR's Hall of Fame induction ceremony in January and featured in an exhibit.
Phillips, who battled polio throughout his life, died in 2012 at age 74.
Phillips also wrote for Stock Car Racing magazine for 27 years and spent 12 years with TBS.
He was one of eight nominees for the Squier-Hall Award, which was created in 2012 and named after NASCAR broadcasters Ken Squier and Barney Hall.
