The Giants may be getting their best linebacker back in the lineup in Week 7. Andrew Weber USA TODAY Sports

Through the first four games of the season, New York Giants linebacker Devon Kennard was arguably the team's best defensive player before a hamstring injury has sidelined him for the last two games. After practicing throughout this week, albeit on a limited basis, Kennard is hopeful that he will play in Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys.

"Two weeks felt like friggin two months," Kennard said, per Jordan Raanan of True Jersey. "I can't wait to get out there. I love the way our defense is competing week in and week out and I want to be a part of it. I want to help us win. I'm excited."

After an excellent finish to his rookie season in 2014, Kennard had evolved into a complete linebacker before the injury. When the Giants needed a play in the passing game, Kennard was there in coverage or as a blitzer. He has also done an excellent job of setting the edge in the running game in 2015.

Kennard stopped short of guaranteeing that he would be back in Week 7, but he is certainly trending in the right direction.

"I just want to continue to progress every day," Kennard said. "See how it's feeling throughout the week and Sunday I'll make the call. But I'm pretty hopeful and hoping I can play because I really want to play this week."
