Derek Carr could miss some time with a reported thumb bruise.

So, the Oakland Raiders could add some quarterback insurance in the form of a familiar face.

The team has reached out to Christian Ponder about the possibility of a return, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Ponder was originally cut by the Raiders out of camp this summer.

Ponder was 22-of-35 for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Raiders this preseason.

He could add some valuable depth behind backup Matt McGloin. He knows the offense and has thrived in an emergency starter's role before.
