BEREA, Ohio (AP) Browns rookie running back Duke Johnson has passed the NFL's protocol on concussions and could play in Sunday's season opener against the Jets.

Johnson has been out since sustaining a head injury in Cleveland's Aug. 29 exhibition at Tampa Bay. The third-round pick from Miami is expected to have a major role in the Browns' offense.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said Johnson has been cleared to practice Wednesday. The team will not be in pads, but Johnson can take part in all portions of the workout.

Johnson was also slowed by a hamstring injury during training camp. Pettine, though, said if Johnson has a solid couple days of practice that he will ''play a significant role'' in the opener.

Without Johnson, the Browns only have Isaiah Crowell on their roster. Cleveland traded Terrance West, last season's leading rusher, to Tennessee on Sunday.
