Bronx, NY – Alex Rodriguez surpassed Lou Gehrig as Major League Baseball's all-time leader in grand slams during Friday's 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Rodriguez's blast off Giants reliever George Kontos in the bottom of the seventh inning was the 24th grand slam of his decorated career. He had tied Gehrig's mark by connecting off Atlanta's Jonny Venters in a 6-4 Yankees' win over the Braves in Turner Field on June 12 of last season.
The milestone homer also snapped a 1-1 tie in a pivotal game for New York, which pulled within three games of a wild card spot in the American League.
Rodriguez took two pitches for a ball against Kontos and swung through another before launching a fastball into the bleachers in right-center field.
Gehrig, of course, spent 17 seasons for the Yankees before being forced to retire due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS, in 1939.
Fourteen of Rodriguez's slams have come as a Yankee, breaking a tie with Joe DiMaggio for second place in club history behind Gehrig.
