The New York Yankees have claimed pitcher Sam Demel off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Demel made one relief outing with Arizona in 2012 after spending the majority of the season with Triple-A Reno, where he went 1-4 with one save and a 4.07 ERA in 56 appearances.

The right-hander owns a 4-4 record with two saves and a 4.95 ERA in 72 career relief appearances with the Diamondbacks from 2010-12.

In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated pitcher Danny Otero for assignment.
