Oakland, CA – Los Angeles Angels outfielder Vernon Wells will undergo surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, the team announced on Monday.
He suffered the setback while attempting to steal second base in the second inning of Sunday's 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
The procedure will be performed on Tuesday by hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steven Shin. Wells is expected to resume baseball activities in 8-10 weeks.
Wells also tweeted the news, saying: "Got bad news today. Need surgery tomorrow. Torn ligament in my thumb."
In 38 games this season for the Angels, his second with the team, he is hitting .244 with six home runs and 12 RBI.
Los Angeles recalled outfielder Kole Calhoun from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Wells' roster spot.
Calhoun, 24, was hitting .296 with five home runs and 31 RBI for the farm club.
