Vance Worley struck out a career-high 11 batters while scattering just four hits over seven strong innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies shut out the San Diego Padres, 2-0, in the opener of a four-game set.

Worley (1-1) walked three and Juan Pierre and Hunter Pence scored for the Phillies, who snapped a two-game skid with their 12th consecutive win over the Padres at PETCO Park.

Jonathan Papelbon got around a leadoff walk in the ninth with a double play and a strikeout to record his fourth save of the season.

San Diego rookie Joe Weiland (0-2) suffered the loss despite giving up just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over six frames. The Padres had just four hits in their seventh loss in eight tries.
