Samir Nasri scored a pair of penalty kicks in overtime as Arsenal ousted north London rival Tottenham from the League Cup with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night, and Everton was beaten in a shootout by third-tier Brentford.
Henri Lansbury put the Gunners ahead in the 15th minute at White Hart Lane, but Tottenham substitute Robbie Keane tied it in the 49th.
After being fouled by Sebastien Bassong 30 seconds into overtime, Nasri converted from the penalty spot and the France midfielder beat goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa again five minutes later after Steven Caulker brought down Marouane Chamakh.
Andrei Arshavin ended any hopes of a Tottenham comeback by shooting low past Pletikosa in the 105th minute.
But the victory could have come at a cost for Arsenal, with England defender Kieran Gibbs limping off during overtime with a suspected broken bone in his left foot.
The 20-year-old Gibbs, who will be assessed by medics on Wednesday, fractured a metatarsal in the same foot in November 2009 and didn't play again last season.
Everton, which is yet to win in the Premier League season, was eliminated following a 1-1 tie against Brentford when Jermaine Beckford and Phil Jagielka missed penalty kicks.
Seamus Coleman had put Everton in front in the sixth minute with his first goal for the club, but Gary Alexander tied it in the 41st for the League One club with a powerful header.
Bolton was the other Premier League casualty in the third round, with Owen Coyle's team losing 1-0 at former club Burnley, which was relegated from the top flight last season. Wade Elliott scored in the 45th.
In all-Premier League matches, Stoke beat Fulham 2-0 and West Ham won 2-1 at Sunderland. Elsewhere, Birmingham defeated MK Dons 3-1, Wolverhampton eliminated Notts County 4-2 in overtime, Ipswich won 2-1 at Millwall, Swansea triumphed 3-1 at Peterborough and Leicester beat Portsmouth 2-1.
In the other third-round matches on Wednesday it is Aston Villa vs. Blackburn, Chelsea vs. Newcastle, Liverpool vs. Northampton, Scunthorpe vs. Manchester United, Wigan vs. Preston and West Bromwich Albion vs. Manchester City.

MADRID (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo scored for his second goal of the Spanish league season, starting Real Madrid to a 3-0 victory over Espanyol.
The Portuguese forward had to retake a penalty kick in the 62nd minute but confidently tucked it into the same spot at Santiago Bernabeu.
With both teams reduced to 10 men, Gonzalo Higuain slid Ronaldo's through ball past Carlos Kameni and inside the near post in the 78th. Karim Benzema replaced Higuain and shook off the defense inside to score in the 88th.
Madrid (3-0-1) moved into first place, one point ahead of Valencia (3-0).
Athletic Bilbao kept up its good start with a 3-0 victory over Mallorca, while Osasuna got its first victory, 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Daniel van Buyten's goal one minute into second-half stoppage time gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
Bayern fell behind when Vedad Ibisevic scored after just 36 seconds, but Thomas Mueller tied it in the 62nd minute,
Bayern's Franck Ribery limped off with an injured right ankle in the 64th minute.
Bayern (2-1-2) is seventh in the league with eight points, seven points behind surprise leader Mainz (5-0), which beat Cologne 2-0 on Lewis Holtby's goals in the 72nd and 91st.
Hannover (3-1-1) is third with 10 points after a 4-1 victory at home over struggling Werder Bremen (1-3-1), which has just four points.
