NBC is hopeful that it can use the Olympics to funnel more viewers into morning program “Today,” but on Tuesday at least, the show couldn’t top ABC’s “Good Morning America,” according to Variety.

After “Today” prevailed on Monday of this week, Tuesday saw “GMA” average 6.42 million viewers while “Today” netted 6.01 million, according to Nielsen estimates. According to ABC, this is the first time “GMA” has beaten “Today” during an Olympics televised by NBC since the Peacock began its run as the exclusive network host of the Games from Atlanta in 1996.

“Today” did prevail in the key news demo of adults 25-54 (2.56 million to 2.47 million).

During the Vancouver Games of four years ago, when “Today” was still entrenched as the morning ratings leader, it won over ABC by a whopping 1.6 million total viewers, including by 1.1 million viewers in the 25-54 demo. And compared to the first Tuesday from Vancouver, viewership of “Today” was down 9 percent while “GMA” shot up by 40 percent.
