Italy Dismantles Human Trafficking Ring

Italian officials say they have dismantled an alleged human trafficking ring which smuggled migrants into Europe in life-threatening conditions.

Officials said Wednesday they had issued arrest warrants for 35 people after raids were conducted in cities across Italy, including Rome, Milan and Bologna. News reports said some of those arrested were Afghan nationals.

The migrants were mostly from Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, many crammed in vans, hidden in trucks or stowed away in containers, news reports said. An Italian agency that fights organized crime said their lives were constantly in danger.

They arrived in southeastern Italy via Greece or Turkey, were moved to northern Italian cities, and from there to Belgium, Germany and other northern European nations.
