Charming video maps many dialects of American English

What’s the word for “a sweetened carbonated beverage?” Did you say soda or pop?
According to a video published this week by the Atlantic, your answer reveals as much about where you’re from as your birth certificate.
Using data from the 2003 Harvard Dialect Survey, in which former Harvard professor Bert Vaux asked tens of thousands of Americans across the country to supply their word for things like “a group of two or more people” and “the rubber-soled shoes worn in gym class,” the Atlantic called people around the nation with Vaux's questions and layered the answers over dialect maps created by North Carolina State University graduate student Joshua Katz.
The results of all that qualitative research appear downright adorable in the four-minute video. So pull out some “peeecans” and a “hoagie” and learn about how Americans talk.
