Yet another Russian MMA prospect has won a Bellator tournament and this time it was at the expense of inspirational fighter Rad Martinez.
Shahbulat Shamhalaev knocked out Martinez in the second round featherweight tournament final.
Martinez was performing in front of his home state crowd in Utah when a right hand and a hammerfist ended his night and denied him a storybook championship title shot.
Martinez had been profiled in ESPN in 2011 as he takes care of his father who was severely injured in a car accident that left him brain damaged and unable to care for himself.
Now Shamhalaev wins the 100,000 dolar bonus and the shot at either Pat Curran or Daniel Strauss after they fight for the championship.
King Mo Loses
Maybe Muhammed Lawal was getting a little cocky. The Strikeforce veteran was a huge favorite to win Bellator’s light heavyweight tournament and has given Bellator some of the most attention.
But in his semifinal match up with Emanuel Newton, King Mo fell and hard.
Newton knocked out the Mo with a spinning back fist and punched his ticket to the tournament finals.
As for Mo, he now will dedicate time to his pro wrestling career.
Other Bouts
Douglas Lima defeated Bryan Baker by knockout in Round 1 of the welterweight tournament semifinals.
Mikhail Zayats defeated Jacob Noe with an armbar submission in Round 1 of the light heavyweight tournament semifinals.
Ben Saunders defeated Raul Amaya by knockout in Round 1of the welterweight tournament semifinals.
