President Obama plans to meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff Wednesday at the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.
The meeting comes on the heels of a sit-down with top national security advisers and military commanders last week.
Obama's administration faces the difficult task of engineering an orderly pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq while sending more forces into Afghanistan to stabilize the region.
Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday that Afghanistan is the country's "greatest military challenge."
Another likely topic of conversation will be Obama's order last week to close the Guantanamo Bay prison camp within one year.
