Dozens of Australian bank branches were mobbed by frenzied crowds as people went to ATMs to make withdrawals from their accounts – only to find the machines spitting out thousands of dollars in ‘free money.’

At some Commonwealth Bank branches in Sydney, lines were 30-deep as members lined up to take advantage of a computer glitch that allowed accounts to be overdrawn by large sums.

Customers with only a handful of dollars were able to withdraw hundreds, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The crowds outside each ATM grew on Tuesday as people went on Twitter to tell others about their unexpected monetary gains.

Police were tipped off about the glitch after customers contacted branches and complained about long lines.

After the glitch was corrected, a bank spokesman said the company will look at withdrawal records to determine which members fraudulently withdrew cash. New South Wales police added that those caught could face 10 years in jail on fraud charges.
