SAN FRANCISCO – After being asked detailed questions about their views on Latinos, immigration and guns, a jury has been selected for the murder trial of the man who fatally shot Kate Steinle.
Six women and six men were seated as jurors Wednesday in the murder trial of 54-year-old Jose Ines Garcia Zarate. The dozen jurors said they didn't have views of Latinos or persons who have entered the country illegally that would prevent them from keeping an open mind.
Opening statements are Monday.
The shooting touched off a political furor during the presidential campaign because Zarate was released from San Francisco's jail despite a federal immigration request to hold for deportation.
Zarate said the shooting was accidental. His lawyer Matt Gonzalez said he was pleased with the jury selected. Prosecutors declined comment.
