One person was killed in a crash involving a gas tanker truck that sparked a massive fireball Tuesday in California, officials said.
The California Highway Patrol told FOX 40 investigators believe the truck was going too fast while exiting Highway 99 in Atwater, located just outside Merced, and hit a concrete divider.
The driver of the truck was killed, according to police. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
Around 200 people in the area were evacuated due to the crash and resulting fire. Photos from the scene posted by FOX 26 show damage to a nearby McDonald's and parked vehicles.
The Atwater Police Department posted on Facebook to ask people to avoid the area.
Smoke can be seen by residents in North Merced, located 5-8 miles away from the scene of the crash, according to FOX 40.
People on social media also shared videos and photos of the massive plume of smoke caused by the crash.Display nothing; This is on Publish with no configured Image
