Kelvin Watford, 50, told his friend he was returning from a trip but nowhere near home, in a bit of misdirection so as to surprise her that evening, according to investigators.

While they were speaking on the phone, she heard some commotion outside, and her dog began barking. The woman quickly grabbed her firearm, heard someone near her house, saw someone from the bedroom door walking on the stairs, and fired the weapon once.

The woman called Hamilton Township police at around 11:23 p.m., Patch reported, adding that officers found Watford at the bottom of the stairs, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

The incident unfolded in Mercer County, which includes the New Jersey state capital, Trenton. No charges have been brought against the friend as police are still investigating the incident.
