MIAMI – A South Florida man is facing a potentially lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty in the heist of $4.8 million in gold bars from a truck along a remote North Carolina interstate.
Sentencing is set Monday in Miami federal court for 46-year-old Adalberto Perez, who faces a maximum 40-year prison term and $1.2 million in fines. Co-conspirator Roberto Cabrera previously got almost 20 years behind bars.
The FBI says Perez, Cabrera and a third person used a GPS device in March 2015 to track the gold-laden tractor-trailer heading from Miami to Massachusetts. Investigators say pepper spray was released by remote control to sicken the driver and a passenger before the robbery along Interstate 95 in Wilson County, North Carolina.
Authorities say 275 pounds of gold bars and some silver were stolen.
