Police say an 18-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was stabbed in the neck with a golf club shaft at Breakheart Reservation in Wakefield.

Officers were dispatched to the 640-acre state park following reports of a fight in progress around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The victim, who wasn't identified, was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center by helicopter.

State police say he was "alive and stable" as of late Tuesday night.

An 18-year-old Beverly man was arrested in connection with the stabbing after crashing a stolen vehicle in downtown Wakefield.

Lt. Steven Skory says the altercation appears to be an isolated incident between the two parties, who knew each other.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges including assault with intent to murder.
