ROUND ROCK, Texas – Investigators have determined that a Texas sheriff's deputy found dead at his home after notifying dispatchers of prowlers in his yard killed himself.
Authorities said at a news conference Friday that Travis County sheriff's Sgt. Craig Hutchinson was suffering from depression and facing foreclosure on his home and other financial pressures.
Officials last week announced that the 54-year-old Hutchinson had died from a gunshot from his service weapon, but declined to say whether he killed himself or if the weapon was taken from him.
Hutchinson used his police radio around 1:30 a.m. on July 25 to report two suspects behind his house.
Officers arriving moments later found the 32-year law enforcement veteran lying on the ground in his backyard in Round Rock, about 15 miles from Austin.
