A Pittsburgh man jailed on charges he shot another man in the face three times tells police the fatal encounter was an accident that happened while he was trying to buy a gun from the victim.

Eighteen-year-old Kenneth Murphy was jailed Tuesday on criminal homicide and other charges in the death of 20-year-old Christopher Rodriguez.

Police say Murphy told them he was handling the revolver he thought was empty when it fired accidentally inside Rodriguez's residence Monday night. Police say Murphy told them he kept pulling the trigger thinking the other chambers were empty, but they were actually loaded.

An autopsy showed Rodriguez was shot three times.

Murphy is jailed without an attorney.

Police say Murphy told them he was friends with Rodriguez since the sixth grade.
