Police in suburban Phoenix say a robbery suspect has died at a senior living center where he'd barricaded himself after being shot by an officer during a scuffle.

Lt. Michael Pooley says an officer trying to apprehend the suspect in connection with the robbery of a pharmacy shot the man once during a scuffle Wednesday morning in Tempe.

Pooley says the suspect retreated into the nearby senior center where he barricaded himself in a storage area.

Pooley says the man who was shot matched the description of the robbery suspect, who was after pharmaceuticals.

At least some of the residents of the senior center were evacuated during the incident and none were injured.

Tempe police say an armed robbery suspect is holed up in a senior living center after being shot and wounded by police.

Officer Lilly Duran says residents of the senior center are being evacuated and that none are near the room where the suspect barricaded himself Wednesday morning.

Duran says an officer has been taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries that aren't life-threatening.

Duran also says additional details on the robbery, the shooting of the suspect and circumstances of how the officer was injured aren't immediately available.
