WINDHAM, Conn. – The first 85 students are slated to start classes this fall under a new scholarship program that assists immigrants in states where they face hurdles in attending public universities.
Eastern Connecticut State University and Delaware State University are partnering with TheDream.US, a national scholarship fund, to host the selected students. Forty-six have been accepted at Eastern, 39 at Delaware State.
The program helps immigrants without permanent legal status in 16 states where they're barred from top state schools or ineligible for in-state tuition.
The four-year scholarships are worth up to $20,000 a year. They're available to a group of immigrants known as DREAMers, who are covered under a 2012 federal policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The policy allows certain individuals who entered the U.S. before 2007 and before their 16th birthday to receive a renewable, two-year work permit and a Social Security number.
