Police in Maryland have posted a Facebook video of an officer posing with a black bear in the background.

The video shows Maryland Natural Resources Police Officer Marguerita Gay smiling for the video in a wooded area of Baltimore County with the bear climbing a downed tree in the distance behind her.

The department says Gay and another officer were checking on a report that the bear was near picnickers. Some Facebook commenters have criticized the video as an example of what not to do around a bear. Police have responded that it was a short video and the bear and officers quickly moved on.

Police have dubbed it the Beltway Bear because it has been spotted in the Baltimore-Washington area during the past several weeks.
