A search will resume at daybreak for a plane that went missing over the weekend after departing from Santa Catalina Island in Southern California with a student pilot and instructor on board.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Lisa Jansen says the single-engine Cessna 172 was last seen upon takeoff Saturday from Catalina Airport on its way to Van Nuys Airport.

Jansen says sheriff's and Coast Guard crews would resume searching the waters off Catalina after dawn Tuesday. Efforts were called off when darkness fell Monday night.

Catalina is about 20 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.
