Shooting at NYC rap concert leaves one dead, three wounded

No arrests have been made

At least one person died and three others were wounded Wednesday night in a shooting at a music venue in New York City where rapper T.I. was set to perform, police said.

Authorities said the shooting occurred at around 10:15 p.m. at Irving Plaza, near Manhattan’s Union Square.

Police said a 33-year-old man was shot in the stomach. He was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later.

A 34-year-old man was shot in the chest and was listed in critical condition. A 26-year-old woman was shot in the leg and a fourth person checked into the hospital under their own power, police said. They were expected to survive.

There have been no arrests made in the shootings and the description of a possible suspect hasn’t been released.

Rappers Maino and Uncle Murda were performing at the time of the shooting and T.I. had not come out on stage yet, concertgoers told PIX 11. T.I. was scheduled to perform at 1OAK later Wednesday, but law enforcement sources told PIX 11 that venue was shut down by police.

At least 1,000 people were at Irving Plaza for the concert. Police told PIX 11 there were metal detectors at the venue and they were investigating whether they were being used.

Concertgoer Elijah Rodriguez told the Associated Press that T.I. was scheduled to take the stage at around 9 or 9:30 p.m. but never went on. He said once the venue started playing music again, he saw people coming out from where the performers were coming onstage.

"All the sudden I heard someone saying that there was a shot, that someone got shot," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez didn't actually hear the shots himself, but heard people saying that someone had gotten shot.

"It was scary to deal with. When I got outside, like literally across the street, there were a few girls having, like, panic attacks. One girl thought she saw someone get shot in front of her," Rodriguez said, adding that T.I was not onstage when the shots were fired.

Video recorded from inside Irving Plaza showed a chaotic scenes as concertgoers rushed to the sides trying to leave the area as a group of people tended to a person on the floor.

Representatives for T.I., whose real name is Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., say they're referring all questions about the shooting to police.

Irving Plaza is a 1,025-person ballroom-style music venue.
