The board of an Arizona NAACP branch has accepted the resignation of its embattled leader after he came under fire for comments about a female reporter.

The board of the Maricopa County branch made its decision during a closed meeting Monday night.

Don Harris, who became the branch president in 2015, made the comment about the reporter’s anatomy after attending a meeting about Desert Vista High School students who took a photo of themselves spelling out a racial slur on their T-shirts.

Harris previously told reporters he was sorry for what he said.

A short statement issued by the board said the Maricopa County branch will continue to work on issues important to the community and that the mission is to push for equality of rights.
